Kate Spade, founder and designer for Kate Spade New York was buried in Kansas City on June 21, 2018, following her suicide weeks before. Her funeral was attended by hundreds of loved ones who attended to show their respects for the late designer, many of them sporting a Kate Spade handbag in her memory.
Making the occasion even more sorrowful, Spade’s family released a statement shortly before the funeral began, saying her father had died the night before at his home.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that Katy’s father, Earl F. Brosnahan, Jr. (Frank), passed away last night at age 89,” the family said in a statement to “Good Morning America” on Thursday. “He had been in failing health of late and was heartbroken over the recent death of his beloved daughter. He was at home and surrounded by family at the time of his passing.”
The designer was found in her New York apartment after committing suicide. Spade had been struggling with depression for years and following her death, Kate Spade New York pledged to donate $1 million to mental health awareness causes and suicide prevention organizations.
The family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or to a Kansas City animal shelter.
